“Finite structures and their continuous approximations"
Kivonat: There are many instances of sequences of larger and larger graphs, which become more and more similar, in the sense that they become more and more difficult to distinguish in terms of their observable parameters. A theory of limit objects for such sequences was worked out some 20 years ago. Limit theories of other objects (permutations, hypergraphs, partially ordered sets) followed. In the last few years, with several young colleagues I was working on a limit theory of matroids (less generally known, but very interesting mathematical objects).
I will give a glimpse of some key results in this area, along with an example of the deep sociological division between scholars of finite and quite similar continuous structures.
