Interface and boundary states in topological systems
While the prevailing early belief was that topological surface and boundary states in insulators are insensitive to non-magnetic
disorder, the emerging consensus is that quantum numbers of those states strongly depend on the boundary conditions. I will review the results showing that surfaces and impurities can modify the topological state properties in topological insulators and Weyl
semimetals, and discuss experimental signatures of these modifications. The particular emphasis will be on the possibility of
non-helical states at topological interfaces, current-carrying states at extended magnetic impurities, and the reconnection of Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals.
