Department of Theoretical Physics

The Department of Theoretical Physics at the BME Institute of Physics is a leading centre for teaching and research in modern theoretical physics. Department members contribute to teaching and supervision in the Physics and Physics Engineering BSc programmes, the MSc programme in Physics, and the doctoral programme in Physics. The Department also plays an important role in physics education at the engineering faculties of BME. Our research activities cover a broad range of fields, from theoretical condensed matter physics through quantum theory and quantum technologies to statistical physics. Our researchers work on cutting-edge theoretical topics including quantum computing, quantum error correction, the statistical physics of quantum many-body systems, magnetic and superconducting nanostructures, the role of topology and geometry in quantum physics, as well as complex systems and networks. An important component of the Department’s activities is to attract students to research, from student research projects and diploma theses to doctoral studies. Our researchers are active in national and international scientific collaborations and have a strong and successful track record in acquiring competitive research funding.
